Pastéis de Belém

Is it a patent attorney thing to visit the patent office of a city you're visiting? I went to see INPI, the Portuguese Patent Office located at the riverside in central Lisbon.😎

I admit, this isn't the most important place to visit in Portugal. However, visiting Fabrica Pastéis de Belém and trying their original - and very delicious - Portuguese egg custard tarts called "Pastéis de Belém" is certainly a must!

The recipe of Pastel de Belém was invented in the Jerónimos Monastery in Belem in the 19th century. Today, they bake about 20000 every day, using the original recipe.

Let's see some interesting IP facts about "Pastéis de Belém":

  1. Trademark

You can eat similar tarts at many places, but those are called "Pasteis de nata", since Pastéis de Belém is a registered trademark in both Portugal (since 1918) and the EU (since 1999).

  2. Trade secret

The recipe of the Pastel de Belém has been a secret since 1837 and only a very few people know it. The recipe is held in a secret room.

Have you ever tried Pastel de Belém or Pastel de nata? If so, how did you like it?

I tried both and liked Pastéis de Belém a bit more.😋
